Wagner Primary School

Wagwer Primary School is in Western Kenya and is one of the oldest schools in the District, but had been in steady neglect from when it was first built in the 1950s. Before Moving Mountains Trust became involved, it was completely run down with no facilities to speak of. Attendance was poor, student grades very low and the community lacked pride in its institution.

Overview

Since 2003 we have been working with the school and the local community to completely renew the school facilities and integrate the primary with a new secondary school on the same land.

Our long-term vision is about promoting education and cognitive development in the entire district, offering a community covering many thousands of people a future with good prospects, a good education for their children and consequently a greater hope for employment in the future.

Today, Wagwer provides quality education for around 280 students each year and we have now completed construction and renovation work here. Our responsible volunteering programme provides valuable cash flow and assistance and our volunteers help with non-curricular subjects and mentoring alongside our staff.

History of the Project

2003 – 2009 – Moving Mountains started supporting the school and undertook a phased plan over six years to rebuild every structure and put in facilities for the school. This includes nice classrooms, a water borehole, and pump, a computer room, renovation of the grounds, special needs facilities, school uniforms, textbooks, and stationery.

2013 – Continued annual repair work and repairs with our work team.

2014 – Renovation work on six classrooms – window panes, floor work, paintwork, and verandah.

2014 – Contribution to the development of extra-curricular activities and youth opportunities in Siaya from EVS volunteers (European Voluntary Service) through a European Union Youth-in-Action programme grant.

Future Aims

Moving Mountains Kenya continues to work with the school and its community to ensure high academic standards are achieved and maintained. We also continue to support individual children at the school and help to identify those who can go to secondary school. While primary education is free in Kenya, the cost of sending a child to secondary school is high and we work hard to plan this expenditure by attracting donors at an early stage.
